DONCASTER KNIGHTS have headed back to North Wales to snap up the signing of RGC hooker George Roberts.
The 22-year-old former Wrexham player enjoyed a superb campaign with the Colwyn Bay-based Welsh Premiership side before lockdown was enforced.
Roberts, who has spent all of his senior career at RGC, follows fly-half Billy McBryde to South Yorkshire after the Knights announced the signing of the son of Wales coach Robin, while tighthead prop Joe Jones, who hails from Mold, has also made the move.
Roberts combined playing for The Gogs while studying sports science after winning a rugby scholarship at Bangor University.
Doncaster head coach Steve Boden said: “George is a player I’ve tracked, he’s a good athlete and has a good turn of pace for a front row and a very high work rate.
“The set piece will be an area of development for him, especially with the step up to Championship level but with the hunger he has to learn we believe he can make the jump and we’re excited to see where he can go.”
Roberts featured in 15 of RGC’s 17 league games and was named player of the month for February and he’s delighted with the move.
“Being submerged in a professional rugby environment is an opportunity I can’t wait for,” said Roberts. “When Steve explained his strategy for the club and the future for Doncaster it coincided with my personal goals both as a person and as a rugby player
“My main focus both is to develop, both on and off the rugby field. For the Knights, I want do to everything I can to help the team and to perform to the highest possible standard come Saturday afternoon.
“I also really want to enjoy playing rugby at Doncaster and build positive relationships with players, staff and the fans!”
Former Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw has signed for Shining Arcs in Japan.
The 34-year-old scrum-half moves to the Far East after leaving French outfit Clermont Auvergne.
