WREXHAM weren't in action on Saturday so Phil Parkinson took the opportunity to watch two of his side's forthcoming League One opponents.
Exiting the FA Cup meant the Reds didn't have a fixture so Parkinson was at Oakwell to see Barnsley, who visit The Racecourse this evening, take on Bristol Rovers in the second round of the competition.
The game finished in a goalless draw and Rovers, who entertain Wrexham on Saturday December 21, won 4-3 on penalties to progress to round three.
"I went to Barnsley and had a good look at them which is always good," said Parkinson.
"Barnsley had chances but didn't take them, Bristol Rovers grew into it and it went to penalties in the end.
"It was a good win for Bristol and obviously disappointing for Barnsley."
Second placed Wrexham, who ended November with back-to-back home wins against Exeter City (3-0) and Lincoln City (1-0) to remain four points behind leaders Wycombe Wanderers, face a Barnsley side who sit sixth in the table.
"Barnsley were in the play-offs the last couple of years so they are one of them teams like Peterborough who always seem to be at the top end of League One and had the taste of a bit of success in the Championship as well," added Parkinson.
"Barnsley were one of the teams that people expected to be up there at the start of the season and they have had a decent start so it will be a great test for us."
