IF it’s goals you are after, look no further than the Deeside Dragons.
The Dragons had two encounters in their latest spot of busy action and these matches produced a bumper haul of 30 goals.
While 18 of them were scored by Deeside, the team could only celebrate one victory.
This came away at Leeds Knights, with the Dragons skating off with a 14-7 outcome.
A tight opening period ended with the scoreline tied at two-apiece.
Leeds managed to build-up a 2-0 advantage initially, but this was cancelled out by responses from Jared Dickinson and James Shaw.
An all-action second period witnessed 10 goals, with eight of these going the way of the visiting side.
Jake Witkowski’s hat-trick helped the Dragons to take control of the contest and he was joined on the scoresheet by Alex Parry (2), Jakub Hajek, Matt Wainwright and Charles Phillips.
Deeside finished the game off by winning the final period 4-3.
Further goals were provided by MJ Clancy, MVP Parry’s hat-trick strike, Wainwright and a fourth from Witkowski.
Deeside’s assistant head coach Matt Compton said: “On Saturday night, we were lucky in some respects we scored so many.
“We did well to win. We shouldn’t have conceded seven. Two tops, maybe.
“But we scored some really good goals. We’ve got no problems scoring goals.”
While there were fewer goals the following day, there was still an exciting encounter at home to Widnes Wild, with the visitors edging it 5-4.
Following the night before, it must have been unusual for the Dragons’ faithful to witness a scoreless first period.
It was Widnes who had the better of the second period and they were 4-2 ahead going into the final break.
Dickinson’s opener for Deeside was met by four responses from Widnes.
A goal from MVP Witkowski did at least hand the Dragons some hope as they prepared for the final period.
Another Dickinson goal did cut the gap between the teams back down to one, but Wild nudged 5-3 ahead with less than five minutes left to play.
Cade King did grab the home side’s fourth goal with 37 seconds on the clock, but Widnes were able to see the game out.
“On Sunday, we had a really, really good crowd in,” added Compton.
“It was so disappointing we couldn’t win.
“We didn’t get ourselves going to win on Sunday.
“We didn’t put ourselves in a position to win the game. It didn’t look right.”
Reflecting on the defeat, Witkowski told the Puck ‘N’ Dragon podcast: “It’s disappointing at home to not get the three points.
“It’s just, I think we’re better than that. So, just regroup, have a good week of practice and then try to forget about it.”
