THERE has been double joy for Connah’s Quay Nomads out on the football pitch.
The Wales Walking Football over-50s and over-60s league season came to its finale earlier this month with the play-offs between the top teams in the leagues from North and South Wales.
Games were played at a new venue for clubs, namely at Ludlow Town FC’s ground – just over the border in the Welsh Marches.
The over-50s played first in a highly competitive round robin of six clubs.
A single point separated the top four, but Connah’s Quay Nomads were a point clear and they were duly crowned as champions.
Nomads were undefeated in their five matches, winning two and drawing three, with captain Craig McGorian lifting the trophy. They would finish one point clear of Neath Dragons, Caldicot and Llangennech in a closely-fought tournament.
The over-60s played next in a second round robin of six clubs.
Going into the last round of matches, any one of four teams could have topped the table, but in the end it was Connah’s Quay Nomads who prevailed again.
They pipped runners-up Abercynon by a single point.
Captain John McGinnell lifted the trophy for undefeated Quay, completing a brilliant double for Peter Hazeldine’s Nomads and North Wales.
