MOLD ALEX are the masters of their knockout meetings with Briton Ferry Llansawel!
Back in the spring, Mold came out on top 4-2 in the final of the Cymru Cup against the Cymru South champions.
Ferry are now in the top flight, but that didn’t bother Barry Owen’s side one bit in their Welsh Cup showdown and a terrific first half showing helped Alex to record a 2-1 triumph in the shock of the round.
Assistant boss Liam Groves told Mold’s X site: “Absolutely delighted. Financially for the club, it goes a long way and another win, and another good performance.”
Alex had a 2-0 lead by the midway point in the tie.
Owen Cordiner grabbed the opener in the 37th minute and then in first half stoppage time, Emmanuel Lawal doubled the lead.
“It was important today that we went back to basics,” said Groves. “We did well what we did well at the start of the season, which was we were tough to beat before anything else.
“We knew that we weren’t going to see a lot of the ball today, so what we did see, we had to make count and I think the way the first half went, we probably, arguably, should have had four-or-five goals.
“Obviously, we got the two, the second one coming at a perfect time for us. That felt like a real sort of turning point in the game, but to be critical on our half, we could have had more.”
Ferry sought a second half fightback and it was game on once more when Alex Gammond halved the deficit with 10 minutes remaining.
Mold weren’t about to buckle, though, and they confirmed a terrific triumph.
Alex are one of five Cymru North clubs through to the last-16.
Title chasers Colwyn Bay also progressed with their 2-1 success over fellow Cymru North outfit Ruthin Town. Ethan Roberts’ cross set Craig Lindfield up for the Seagulls’ opener midway through the first half, only for Ruthin to draw level through Llyr Morris.
Sam Hart’s goal early in the second half made sure of the win for Michael Wilde’s hosts.
Wilde told Bay’s YouTube channel: “I think anybody that was here could probably see that we weren’t playing our kind of free-flowing football, but I think cup games do that to you anyway.
“We made it more difficult for ourselves, but overall, the idea of cup games is to get into the next round and we’ve done that.”
It also finished up 2-1 as Caersws got the better of Bangor 1876 in another all-Cymru North encounter.
Jamie Jones’ stoppage time strike won it, with Sam Phillips also on target for the Mid Walians. Liam Morris grabbed Bangor’s response.
Denbigh Town eased through via a 3-0 verdict at Llanrwst United. Nathan Brown, Owen Davies and Keelan Williams were on the mark for Dewi Llion’s side.
However, Llandudno departed the competition with their 3-2 loss at Cambrian United.
Adam Stephens and Mark Cadwallader twice had Llandudno in the box seat, only for Cambrian to hit back through Tim Parker, Josh Allen and Danny Birch.
