PHIL PARKINSON has been dealt another injury blow after two players hobbled out of Tuesday's EFL Trophy clash against Port Vale.

The Reds' boss rang the changes for the final group game at Vale Park, naming a completely different side to the one that started Saturday's 1-0 home win against Mansfield Town which kept the Reds third in League One.

However centre-back Will Boyle, named captain for the evening, sustained a calf injury in the warm-up and had to be replaced by Max Cleworth who instead donned the armband.

There was more bad news when wing-back Luke Bolton, back in the fold after recovering from a foot injury, also sustained a calf problem and came off after just 12 minutes.

The game finished in a 1-1 draw and although Wrexham lost 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out, the Reds will be at home in the last 32 but Parkinson was left counting the cost at the end of the game.

"Boyley pulled his calf in the warm-up, the last sprint," he said.

"He had a little niggle with it during the week but we thought it was just a kick and then he pulled it in the warm-up.

"Luke has been training so well, he has been really good for us.

"Obviously Ryan Barnett has done brilliant in that position but Luke pulled his calf as well which is a blow for us but it happens and we have got to move on."

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Mo Faal led the Reds' attack but with fellow strikers Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher currently sidelined, Parkinson didn't want to push the duo too far against Vale.

"Jon hasn't played and I always wanted to bring him off after 60 minutes," added the Reds' boss, who had one eye on Saturday's league clash against Stockport County at Edgeley Park.

"I wanted to stretch Mo longer but he was cramping up and we couldn't afford to get him or Jon injured because the league is so important and we are already with Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher."
