IT was job done as far as Phil Parkinson was concerned after Wrexham avoided defeat inside 90 minutes against Port Vale to secure a home draw in the last 32 of the EFL Trophy.
Both teams had already qualified for the knockout stages going into the final group game at Vale Park and a 1-1 draw meant Wrexham finished top to guarantee a Racecourse tie in round two.
League Two leaders Vale won the penalty shoot-out 3-1 but the Reds' boss looked at the bigger picture.
"We came here to get the home tie and we've done that," said Parkinson.
"Of course we still wanted to win the penalty shoot-out but we knew it was incidental.
"We knew that we just had to avoid defeat and we were top with a home game so the minute the final whistle went, we knew the job was done."
Paul Mullin converted Wrexham's first spot-kick but Vale goalkeeper Ben Amos saved efforts by Anthony Forde, Sebastian Revan and Ollie Rathbone.
"Penalties are penalties," added Parkinson. "We wanted to win and their goalkeeper has made some great saves.
"Could we have struck them better? Yes, but it was about us getting a few of the youngsters like Josh Adam and Aaron James on the pitch."
