WREXHAM suffered a 3-1 penalty shootout defeat against Port Vale in their final EFL Trophy group game but the 1-1 draw at Vale Park means the Reds will be at home in the knockout stage.

Phil Parkinson made wholesale changes for the clash against the League Two leaders but despite not winning after stand-in captain Max Cleworth put his side ahead, the Reds have a Racecourse tie to look forward to in the last 32.

Here's how the players rated.

CALLUM BURTON: Untested during the first half and was substituted at the break. 6

AARON JAMES: Got another start under his belt and was solid. 7

MAX CLEWORTH: Unexpected start due to Boyle's injury in the warm-up and the stand-in captain led by example, putting Wrexham ahead. 7

LEWIS BRUNT: Wrexham dealt with everything asked of them until Vale's late equaliser. 7

LUKE BOLTON: Only lasted 12 minutes due to injury. 4

ANTHONY FORDE: Rare appearance for Forde and his corner led to Cleworth's goal. 6

MATTY JAMES: The experienced midfielder made his Reds' debut and did well breaking up play up in front of the defence. 7

JOSH ADAM: Showed some neat touches on his debut. 6

JACOB MENDY: Came more into the match in the second half. 6

MO FAAL: Had a couple of half chances in the opening period and had a decent run at goal after the break. 6

JON DADI BODVARSSON: Put himself about. First-half shot was saved but had assist for the opener as his flick-on was pounced on by Cleworth. 7
