MENTION the name Joey Jones in Wrexham and everyone will point towards the fist-punching Wales and Racecourse legend.
But there was another Joey Jones who turned out as the hero of the hour as Lex XI made it through to the last-16 of the Welsh Trophy.
As well as setting up Lex’s goal for Cam Thomas, goalkeeper Jones (pictured above) then saved three penalties in the shoot-out as Lex edged past Llanidloes Town at Stansty Park.
“Joey was brilliant, our man of the match,” said Lex boss Ricky Evans, who came off the bench to score the first penalty in a shoot-out Lex won 5-4 after the tie ended 1-1.
“It was a scrappy game to be honest but the lads put it all in again. We had two chances to win the shoot-out before Alex Palmer stepped up to put us through.”
Connah’s Quay Town and Brickfield Rangers will join Lex in this week’s draw after picking up wins in south Wales.
The Quay were also shoot-out winners at St Josephs in Swansea where Ed Brown tucked away the winning spot-kick.
Brickfield’s Michael Ashworth scored the only goal of the game at Cardiff Draconians.
