THERE’S just one match for Deeside Dragons to concentrate on after a hectic spell,

Following a pair of victories in their double-header with Whitley Warriors last time out, next up for the in-form Dragons is Sunday’s trip to the Nottingham Lions. Deeside won 6-4 and 7-2 last weekend.

A ninth successive triumph will be in the sights of the Deeside side, but the second-placed Dragons won’t be taking anything for granted.

“This league is so tight,” said assistant head coach Matt Compton. “If you’re not on it one night, you will get turned over. We have got to make sure we go into every game mentally strong.”

Looking at Sunday’s hosts, Compton added: “They have made some shrewd signings. They’re a well-coached and well-drilled team.

“They’re a mix of youngsters trying to prove themselves and older heads.”

Players of all ages have been shining. Forty-something Marc Lovell has been turning back the years and Compton said: “Marc was as quick as an 18-year-old. He’s always kept himself fit. We’ve got the 16, 18 year-olds in the team and they will clearly look up to him.”

Cody Ogden grabbed a hat-trick for Deeside Ducks on Saturday, earning him a call-up for the Dragons the following day.

“That was a reward, to show that pathway if you perform for the Ducks,” said Compton.

“We’re really happy with him. It shows the pathway that’s there.”

Tomorrow: Leeds v Whitley; Sheffield v Widnes. Sunday: Billingham v Widnes; Blackburn v Hull; Whitley v Solihull.

Deeside Ducks go to Bradford Bulldogs tomorrow.

It’s been a tough start for the Ducks, who sit at the foot of the standings, but they’re level on points with Nottingham Lions Seconds and Deeside have three games in hand over their rivals.
