THERE was a strong turn out of athletes as Wrexham staged the second fixture of the North Wales cross-country league.
Ysgol Morgan Llwyd staged the race and the first Wrexham AAC member across the line was James Roberts, who clocked 29.42 for eighth place.
The additional efforts of Ryan Davis (14th in 30.37), Ben Goodfellow (18th in 31.18), Daniel Weston (27th in 32.01), Joel Gomes (28th in 32.03) and Ally Hughes (40th in 33.31) helped Wrexham’s senior men to finish top of division two on the day.
Other Wrexham racers taking part were: James Miles (59th in 35.11), Thomas Spence (65th in 35.28), Tony Forster (87th in 36.48), Steven Jones (107th in 38.13), Richard Westwood (133rd in 41.21), Ben Gillin (135th in 41.53), Taylor Jones (144th in 43.06), Ian Grimshaw (146th in 43.26), James Rogers (154th in 44.43), Andrew Bennett (160th in 46.45) and Mark Hughes (165th in 49.39).
Deestriders: Rayko Kolev 38.00; Paul Lewtey 43.32; Graham Bryan 46.45.
Shrewsbury AC’s Liam Rawlings won the race in 28.00, ahead of Meirionnydd RC duo Daniel Kashi (28.24) and Rhodri Owen (28.33).
Deeside AC pair Abigail Doherty (21.47) and Martha Owen (22.18) were second and third in the women’s race, behind winner Madeline Williams, of Shrewsbury AC, who clocked 21.14.
Wrexham’s women finished eighth in division two and their efforts were spear-headed by Amanda Bailey (43rd in 26.55), Erin Smith (48th in 27.01) and Linda Jones (79th in 29.06).
Clubmates Shelley Thomas (101st in 30.20), Hannah Grimshaw (112th in 31.20), Sarah Grimshaw (124th in 31.52) and Alex Edwards (139th in 33.47) also competed.
Christine Cammillare (27.42), Amanda Scotter (32.54) and Claire Harper (36.35) were the leading Deestriders, followed by Jane Blackwell (39.48), Beverley Goodson (41.08) and Fiona Robinson (42.23).
In the M65 class, Wrexham’s Charles Ashley (38th in 32.21), Phil Walker (41st in 34.34) and John Tipping (54th in 70.47) took part, while club competitors in the U15 boys’ race were Harry Simcock (eighth in 17.41), Noah Thomas (10th in 18.01) and Jack Collings (16th in 20.22).
Thirteenth-placed George Hughes (10.14) was Wrexham’s top finisher in the U11 boys’ event, followed by Steffan Thomas (15th in 10.24), Gruffydd Thomas (17th in 10.43), Samuel Walker (18th in 10.52) and Rory Dixon (24th in 11.39).
Evie Hughes (12.42) was eighth in the U15 girls’ event, Grace Hughes (9.55) took seventh in the U13 girls’ race and Ania Phillips (16th in 8.10) took part in the U11 girls’ competition.
There have been a pair of Wrexham marathon men. Gary Bull (12,078th in 4-15.48) competed in Amsterdam and Colin Jones (3,097th in 4.20.28) was in action in York.
With Storm Ashley blasting the North Wales coast, the RunWales Abergele 5k and 10k races were fortunate to go ahead, however some Deestriders weren’t feeling quite so lucky as they cowered in their cars in heavy rain, with the worst of the weather coming towards the end of the 5k.
The sun made an appearance in the 10k and some club members did the double.
Amanda Scotter (56.49), Abby Thurland (59.50) and Melanie O’Sullivan (60.00) achieved personal bests in the 10k.

Wrexham’s James Yarwood clocked 17.20 for fourth spot in the 5k, while Beth Hewitt (54th in 23.42) was the third senior woman. Meanwhile, Deb Pugh (91st in 51.06) was third W55 in the Abergele 10k.
Peter Hughes (45th in 26.50) and Alan Williams (170th in 50.31) were the Wrexham AAC competitors at the Erddig parkrun, while Rachael Jones (30th in 25.48) and Charles Ashley (64th in 29.30) tackled the Llangollen event.
Connor Rogers (sixth in 21.31) and Mark Hughes (39th in 29.07) were in action at Henley Wood, with Jennifer Moss (89th in 32.02) in Dublin to take part in the Fairview parkrun.
