A BLISTERING start to the second period at Solihull Barons certainly played its part in extending Deeside Dragons’ winning run.

It’s now six wins in a row for the Dragons, who claimed a terrific 7-2 success during their Division One North trip to Solihull Barons.

The first period was a competitive one, but it failed to produce any goals.

Then, a blistering opening to the second period saw the Dragons take control of proceedings with two goals inside 30 seconds.

Jakub Hajek broke the deadlock and this was quickly followed by Jake Witkowski’s strike.

“It shows we can do that,” said Deeside assistant head coach Matt Compton.

“Again, the people who scored the goals did well, but everybody contributed throughout the line-up.

“There’s so many different ways that people contribute to the team.”

Hajek struck again to stretch Deeside’s lead out to three, while Solihull did manage to pull a goal back prior to the end of the period.

The gap between the sides was down to a solitary goal when Barons struck again, but the Dragons weren’t about to be denied and Hajek’s hat-trick goal made it 4-2.

A goal from Charles Phillips extended the lead and Deeside ended the match on top with further efforts coming from MVP Witkowski and Matt Wainwright.

“It was really good,” added Compton.

“It’s just nice to keep it rolling and keeping that habit of winning games. Again, it was another solid team performance.

“(The message) was just to make sure we were running the game.

“In previous years, we have gone there and had poor starts against them. But we managed the game really, really well.”

Deeside Dragons will look to maintain their great form this weekend during a double-header with Whitley Warriors. Dragons head to the North East on Saturday, before they welcome the Warriors 24 hours later.

Other results: Blackburn 3 Whitley 4; Leeds 5 Solihull 6 (overtime); Sheffield 1 Billingham 5; Billingham 10 Leeds 1; Widnes 2 Blackburn 16.

Deeside Ducks suffered a 6-0 Division Two North defeat to the Sheffield Titans away in the Steel City on Sunday.

The game was very close in its early stages, with numerous chances for both sides.

It remained goalless until the Titans finally broke the deadlock on 17 minutes.

The hosts took a narrow 1-0 lead into the first interval, but four more unanswered goals in the second period left the Ducks trailing 5-0 with 20 minutes left to play.

Deeside have struggled to score on their away trips so far this season and the only goal of the third period fell to Sheffield, handing them a 6-0 victory.

Despite the defeat, netminder Paul Jones put in a creditable display in goal and he was named the Ducks’ MVP.

Things don’t get any easier for Deeside.

The Ducks travel to face last season’s league and cup champions Telford Tigers on Saturday (5.30pm).
