DEESIDE DRAGONS are targetting a sixth successive triumph as they prepare for a weekend trip.

On Sunday, the in-form Dragons head to Solihull Barons in their next spot of Division One North action.

Deeside will head into the contest following a fine 5-3 home triumph against Blackburn Hawks and assistant head coach Matt Compton said: “It puts us in a good spot going into next weekend.

“Solihull has always been a tough place to go and play. They’re a very good team and very good at home.”

Solihull scored a bumper 14 goals as they defeated Whitley Warriors and Widnes Wild during a hectic weekend scheduled, but the Dragons will have no fear as they make the trip.

They have won their last five matches in a row in all competitions, with the Blackburn success seeing them finish the game on top.

It remained tight at the end of the first period and the scoreline was tied at one-apiece.

Jared Dickinson supplied the assist as Jake Witkowski grabbed the home side’s first goal, while the Dragons had the better of the second period.

Two goals from James Parsons saw Deeside enter the final period holding a 3-1 advantage.

It was far from game over, though, and Blackburn demonstrated their battling qualities with a pair of goals of their own to level things at 3-3.

Will Harper and Ross Kennedy both found the target to keep Dragons’ excellent run going.

“It’s five wins in a row, which is good,” added Compton. “Keep that rolling on and keep taking it from one week to the next.”

Another important factor is that Deeside only have one game to worry about this weekend.

“It makes lots of difference,” stressed Compton. “Normally, we’re away on a Saturday, late back and playing on Sunday. There’s not much time for recovery.

“Professional players do it, but these lads are working 40 hours in the week, got families and they have got to try and keep themselves fit.

“Having one game at the weekend, fitness wise it’s good and practice wise, you have only got one game to practice for.”

Tomorrow’s fixtures: Blackburn v Whitley; Leeds v Solihull; Sheffield v Billingham. Sunday: Billingham v Leeds; Widnes v Blackburn.

Deeside Ducks were without a game at the weekend and they now face three tough trips on the road.

The Ducks, competing in their first season in Division Two North, are away to Sheffield this Sunday, while they will then travel to face last season’s league and cup champions Telford Tigers the following Saturday, October 26.

They cross the Pennines to take on the Bradford Bulldogs on Sunday, November 3 prior to the next home game - against Telford - at Deeside Leisure Centre on November 17 (5pm face-off).

These early season games against Bradford and Telford all count towards both the league standings and the cup qualification group, so the Ducks will be keen to get some more points on the board as they continue with their exciting debut season.
