NEWCASTLE EAGLES have had their wings clipped by the impressive Cheshire Phoenix.
Eagles headed to Ellesmere Port boasting an unbeaten Super League Basketball Trophy record, beating Caledonia 71-66 in their most recent encounter.
However, Ben Thomas’ charges managed to bring this to an end with a 90-82 success, bouncing back from their recent defeat to Sheffield.
Newcastle were able to build-up a nine-point advantage by the end of the third quarter.
Cheshire required a response and the star trio of TJ Atwood, Cam Holden and Cam Christon then took over, pulling their team back into the game by scoring in a variety of ways and eventually taking the lead with six minutes remaining in the tie.
Eagles looked to battle back, but in the closing minutes, Atwood showed elite composure to close the game out at the free-throw line.
Phoenix’s MVP was Atwood, who scored 23 points, grabbed four rebounds and also supplied an assist in the crucial victory.
Other results: Surrey 69 Bristol 92; Sheffield 84 Caledonia 75.
