IT was always likely to turn out to be a tricky weekend for Mold and Wrexham in Division One North.
So it proved, with Mold being well beaten 87-14 in their home clash against front-runners Nant Conwy, who stretched their winning run this season to five matches.
Bright spots for Mold were supplied by tries from Reece Le Tissier and Scott Jones, both of which were converted by Seth Geary.
Meanwhile, Wrexham lost out 43-12 in their home encounter with second-placed Caernarfon, who maintained their own undefeated record.
Defences were on top for the opening 20 minutes, before three tries saw the Gwynedd side build-up a 19-0 advantage by half-time.
Caernarfon grabbed their bonus point score in the first minute of the second half, while two tries did boost Wrexham’s mood.
Evan Ellis opened the hosts’ account with his unconverted try in the 51st minute and Sam Jones crossed the whitewash after 68 minutes, with Jacob Hughes adding the conversion points.
Bethesda made sure of a 43-24 success in their home meeting with Denbigh, while Pwllheli prevailed 33-10 at Ruthin and Bala got the better of Llangefni 38-26.
Welshpool are the new leaders in Division Two North thanks to their 57-25 success against Machynlleth.
Previous front-runners Dolgellau were undone 36-10 at home to Newtown, while Nant Conwy Athletic were pipped 24-22 versus Colwyn Bay.
In further action, Rhyl & District defeated Abergele 23-14.
Llanidloes took over at the top of Division Three North East on the back of their 33-7 victory at Flint. An injury to the referee meant the match had to be abandoned after an hour, but the result will stand.
Rhosllanerchrugog gained an impressive 31-7 outcome from their trip to Denbigh Athletic, while Mold Athletic’s unbeaten start was halted by a 13-0 loss at COBRA Athletic.
Llangollen-based Bro Gwernant suffered a slender 24-22 defeat versus Ruthin Athletic.
RGC were beaten 31-16 during their Super Rugby Cymru visit to Ebbw Vale.
The sole try for the away team came from Sam Stoddard’s fine individual effort in the first half.
This was converted by Billy McBryde, who also kicked a penalty.
Sam Earl-Jones added to the tally with two long-range penalties from his own half.
Director of rugby Josh Leach told the RGC website: “For 50 minutes we defended well, tackled with aggression and showed good discipline – showing that we had learnt from last week.
“Our forwards did well defending the Ebbw Vale maul, and we went in at half-time with a well-deserved lead.
“We created a couple of chances, weren’t clinical and you could see the momentum shift and from that point we didn’t get to grips with the game.
“I am proud of the boys for their effort, and it was a big improvement on last week, but the lesson is we need to be more ruthless away from home.”
Other results: Aberavon 28 Bridgend 29; Carmarthen 41 Pontypool 31; Swansea 29 Cardiff 38; Newport 28 Llandovery 30.
