WREXHAM have demonstrated that they’re up for the cup!
The Bryn Estyn Road side progressed in the Welsh Division One Cup with an excellent 31-26 triumph at home to COBRA.
Patience was a virtue when it came to scoring, with the deadlock finally being broken after half-an-hour with Jack Partington’s try for the hosts.
This was converted by Jacob Hughes, while COBRA responded with a converted try of their own four minutes later.
There was still time for Wrexham to take control of the tie prior to the break, though, as Lloyd Roberts and Hughes grabbed quickfire tries.
Rhys Davies’ unconverted score had the home side 17 points ahead five minutes into the second half, but COBRA replied with three tries to take the lead late on.
It was to be Wrexham’s day, though, as Davies grabbed his second try with time running out and Hughes added the extras.
Mold departed the cup on the back of their 59-29 defeat at Caernarfon.
Matthew Liversage, Scott Jones, Iwan Hughes, Richard Hopkins and a penalty try boosted Mold’s tally, while Seth Geary kicked two conversions.
In the other North Wales tie, Nant Conwy got the better of Pwllheli 20-0.
Colwyn Bay defeated Welshpool 58-5 in the Division Three Cup, while Mold Athletic progressed in the Division Five Cup with their 54-31 success against Rhosllanerchrugog.
Llanidloes won 69-16 in their match-up with Flint and Wrexham Athletic lost out 21-5 against Bangor.
Other North Wales results: Bala Ath 0 Bethesda Ath 33; Colwyn Bay Ath 20 COBRA Ath 30; Porthmadog 0 Llangefni Ath 57.
RGC’s first away Super Rugby Cymru match of the campaign saw them lose out 32-20 at Pontypool.
Ethan Fackrell and Danny Cross grabbed the tries for RGC, with Billy McBryde kicking two conversions and a penalty.
Sam Earl-Jones’ penalty from 65 metres was the away side’s other score.
Director of rugby Josh Leach told the RGC website: “It is frustrating in some ways, after putting in a huge amount of effort in aspects of the game.
“A combination of our errors and Pontypool’s game cost us at times. When the pace of the game was slow, we just couldn’t find our rhythm and that was disappointing.”
Other results: Cardiff 50 Carmarthen 0; Llandovery 28 Ebbw Vale 31; Newport 29 Aberavon 19.
