FLINT MOUNTAIN manager Aden Shannon has described plans to increase the Cymru Premier League to 16 teams as ‘exciting’ and says his club want to be part of the new-look set-up.

The Football Association of Wales announced plans last week that from the start of the 2026/27 season, Welsh football’s top flight with increase from 12 to 16 teams.

“It’s exciting news and it’s pleasing for the whole of Welsh football,” said Shannon. “Its needed - a change and a freshen up.

“We’ve already sat down and spoke about it; the chairman’s been on and he and the owner are excited.

“We’ve got a couple of meetings planned to discuss our plans going forward but this season is all about sustainability and progressing youngsters into the first team of which we are doing.

“We’ll have a real good go next year and the aim is to get the club to the Welsh Premier League.”

Shannon’s first priority is picking up another three points from tomorrow’s home game with Llay Welfare, who pushed them all the way in the battle for the Ardal North West League title last season.

Flint go into the game on the back of a 5-1 win at bottom-of-the-table Prestatyn Town where Shannon reckoned it could have been double figures.

“It was great win under tough circumstances,” added Shannon, who saw Andy Brown bag a double at a rain-soaked Bastion Gardens. “The game only just went ahead as the pitch was that bad because of the weather.”

Llay head to The Essity Stadium after a 1-1 draw at home to Penrhyncoch.

“We have to take the positives from Saturday’s game,” said boss Phil Hudson.

“We should have taken all three points but it’s three games unbeaten and we will be going to Flint Mountain looking to continue this run of form and take something from the game.”

Mold Alex have been solid at the back during their brilliant four-match winning run, but boss Barry Owen has an ambitious side!

Back in the top-four, Mold will look to maintain their excellent run away to Denbigh tonight.

“It’s a ruthless league, but we have been on a decent run so far,” said Owen.

“We defend from the front. We’re quite an attacking team.

“I was a defender in my time and people would think my teams would be defensively minded and solid.

“But I quite enjoy expansive football. I want to go at teams.”

Denbigh go into the contest following a stunning 2-0 triumph at Holywell and Owen added: “Denbigh are not going to be any easier.

“They have got quality players.

“Not many people would have given them much hope against Holywell, but respect there.”
