STUART PARKER - the Wrexham keeper on that memorable night in Portugal - has been back to his scene of glory and he got a hero’s reception too!

“They’ve moved to a new ground since and all that’s left from the old ground is one floodlight,” recalled Parker, who took in a tour of Porto’s new stadium on a city break with his partner.

“The young lad who was doing the tour mentioned the Wrexham game and I said that I was the Wrexham goalkeeper.

“He looked it up and the next minute he’s got it on the big screen. It was great remembering what was a wonderful night for everyone at Wrexham.”

Parker wasn’t expecting to be celebrating in Portugal even if they had headed across Europe holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

“Jimmy Steel scored at home in front of a crowd of under 5,000 which was disappointing because Porto were giants of European football,” added Parker.

“Their first team was full of Portuguese internationals and Mickey Walsh was there too and there weren’t many players who had moved from England at that time.

“Bobby Roberts told us the game plan was to keep it tight and make sure we didn’t concede early on. We were 3-0 down so that didn’t exactly work but Jake King scored twice before half-time.

“I have to say that the weather was awful. I don’t think it stopped raining from the minute we got there.

“I remember a friend of mine was on holiday in the Algarve and he came to watch the game in a tee-shirt and flip-flops!

“We had fans scattered all over the ground and they enjoyed celebrating after Barry Horne got that goal late on.

“We were flying back straight after the game - and the bar at the ground was shut too! But what they did for European ties was hand players presents and we all had a bottle of port each. So we cracked those open one by one.

“We had Torquay away on the Saturday and we lost there 4-3 too; as we did in the game against Stockport before we flew out!

“It’s amazing to think that it’s 40 years since Porto but what a great experience - it’s one I’ll never forget!”
