WREXHAM have been fined by the Football Association for the second time this season following an altercation in their League One game against Birmingham City last month.

The Reds and Birmingham have each been fined following the incident in the 80th minute of the match at St Andrew's on September 16 which City won 3-1.

All 20 outfield players were involved in a melee after Birmingham’s Alex Cochrane and Wrexham striker Paul Mullin clashed late on in the contest.

An independent regulatory commission decided that Wrexham should be fined £3,750 following the incident, while Birmingham were handed the standard penalty of £2,500.

Mullin, Wrexham captain James McClean and Birmingham skipper Krystian Bielik were booked after the clash, with Bielik later sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

Mullin denied he almost bit Cochrane’s leg and the FA took no action against the striker.

In a statement, the governing body said: "Birmingham City and Wrexham have been fined following their EFL League One match on Monday 16 September.

"Both clubs admitted that they failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper and provocative way during the 80th minute. Birmingham City have been fined the £2,500 standard penalty and an independent Regulatory Commission imposed a £3,750 fine on Wrexham."

Birmingham came from behind to win 3-1 after Jack Marriott gave Wrexham an early lead, ending the Reds' unbeaten start to the season, but both teams are in the top-two heading into October.

The punishment comes following another charge earlier in the season when Wrexham, along with Sheffield United, were fined by the FA following a mass confrontation during the Carabao Cup first round tie on Tuesday August 13.

Both clubs were charged with failing to control their players following the incident towards the end of the game at Bramall Lane, which the Blades won 4-2.

Opposing players were involved in a mass melee after United midfielder Sydie Peck appeared to prevent Wrexham’s Jack Marriott from retrieving the ball from the net after Sebastian Revan’s stoppage-time consolation goal for the visitors.

Both clubs admitted that they failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way around the 94th minute.

In a statement, the FA said the Blades had been fined £8,500 while Wrexham were charged £2,500 for the incident.

According to the FA, United received a higher fine due to the "high number of SUFC players involved" and "SUFC’s very poor previous disciplinary record - both short and long term".
