WREXHAM athletes have demonstrated their golden credentials at a major competition.

Competitors travelled to Tudor Grange, in Solihull, to take part in a City of Birmingham and Worcestershire Special Olympics event.

It was a terrific day for Wrexham athletes, with a trio of club athletes claiming double gold.

Greg Vickers won the T20 100m and F24 shot put, David Bellis triumphed in the T13 400m and T25 800m, while there was T2 200m and shot put gold for Pete Loftus.

Adding to the success stories, Tony Gittins claimed gold in the T18 100m and silver in the F27 standing long jump, while there a pair of silvers for Jason Coles - in the T19 100m and F21 shot put.

Ed Carter and Gaynor Jones both strode away with walk golds - in the T7 and T32 races respectively - and they also picked up silver medals in other competitions.

Gaynor was second in the F4 softball throw with Ed second in the F15 softball throw.

Rachel Thomas scooping gold in the T37 100m, plus a silver in the F3 softball throw, while there was F8 shot put gold for Megan Weetman.

Wrexham athletes have also been team players in order to win medals.

The men’s 4x100m relay team of Greg Vickers, Peter Loftus, Jason Coles and David Bellis secured gold.

In addition, there was a bronze medal for the mixed 4x100m team of Michael Beynon, Rachel Thomas, Megan Weetman and Tony Gittins.

Adding to the success, Gaynor Jones was a member of the Suffolk mixed relay team that took silver.

In all, Wrexham competitors took 13 gold medals, six silver and one bronze.

Meanwhile, a Paralympic Games champion has been showing club members her gold medal.

Deeside AC’s Sabrina Fortune, who won shot put gold at the Paris Games, went along to a training session at Queensway.

Sabrina, a former member of the Wrexham club, look along her gold medal and the team was thrilled to see her.
