ALAN SHEARER says Wrexham's rise is a great story and he praised Hollywood megastars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for investing in the Football League.

The actors completed their takeover at The Racecourse in February 2021 and the club has become a global sensation thanks to the hit 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary.

There has been success on the pitch too with Phil Parkinson leading Wrexham to back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club's history, and the Reds are currently top of the League One after making a superb start to the 2024-25 campaign.

Former England international Shearer, the all-time Premier League top scorer, says what is happening at Wrexham and Birmingham City, where American Football legend Tom Brady is a minority owner, is a real positive for the EFL.

"Yeah, absolutely," Shearer told Betfair.

"When you've got high profile owners who are determined to make a statement and they're spending a few quid - look what Birmingham have spent and where Wrexham have come from to where they are now.

"They're great stories. And then you're getting David Beckham who's sat next to Tom Brady - these pictures have been beamed all over the world so it's great for the EFL, absolutely."
