WREXHAM'S unbeaten start to the League One season came to an end as Birmingham City won 3-1 at St Andrew's but the Reds' remain top of the table.
There was no shortage of celebrities attending the third tier game. Reds' co-chairman Rob McElhenney was present and he was joined by former American football player Tom Brady - a minority owner at Birmingham - and his close friend, ex-England international David Beckham, but it was the Blue corner left celebrating.
Phil Parkinson's side were quick out of the blocks with Jack Marriott opening the scoring after just three minutes, as the Reds' leading scorer bagged his fourth goal in six league games.
But Birmingham came more into the game and with most of the opening period played in the Wrexham half, the Blues' pressure paid off when they equalised.
After keeping four clean sheets in a row, that was the first time the Reds' defence was breached since the opening day 3-2 win against Wycombe Wanderers on August 10.
It was also the first time Wrexham have have been pegged back in the league after taking the lead this season.
But Birmingham pulled away in the second half as they went 3-1 up and Wrexham were second best on the night.
The Blues moved second in the standings, on the same points tally as Wrexham and still unbeaten, with a game in hand.
Parkinson named the same side that started the 3-0 derby victory at home to arch rivals Shrewsbury Town which enabled Wrexham to take over as leaders.
There was a place on the substitutes bench for midfielder Andy Cannon who missed the victory through injury.
Wrexham made the perfect start by taking the lead in the third minute.
Tom O'Connor's corner was only half cleared by goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Marriott fired home.
The Reds continued to press and a good move ended with Ollie Palmer heading wide from Ollie Rathbone's cross.
Birmingham went close when Seung-Ho Paik shot narrowly wide following a clever corner routine but the Blues levelled after 22 minutes.
Alfie May's drive from outside the area was parried by Reds' goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and big money signing Jay Stansfield converted from close range.
The Blues continued to enjoy a good spell of sustained pressure and May's low shot was saved by Okonkwo with resolute defending by Wrexham keeping the home side at bay as it remained all-square at the break.
However, Birmingham picked up where they left off at the statt of the second half and they took a 2-1 lead on 52 minutes.
Alex Cochrane sent in a brilliant cross from the left and Stansfield headed past Okonkwo as Wrexham fell behind for the first time in a league game this season.
It got even worse as Birmingham made it 3-1 in the 59th minute.
The Blues worked the ball to Tomoki Iwata who scored with a low shot from outside the area.
Parkinson made a double change with just over an hour gone as Steven Fletcher and Paul Mullin replaced Palmer and Marriott in attack.
Mullin immediately fired straight at Peacock-Farrell while Cannon came on for Ollie Rathbone before Jacob Mendy and Sebastian Revan were introduced for James McClean and Ryan Barnett.
Birmingham were left with 10 men four minutes from time after Krystian Bielik was shown a second yellow card following a late challenge on Cannon.
Elliot Lee had a late shot saved for Wrexham but the unbeaten run came to an end.
