PHIL PARKINSON says captain James McClean and Elliot Lee have shook off injuries in time to face Birmingham City on Monday night and some of his other walked wounded could also be involved at St Andrew's.

Last Saturday's 3-0 derby win against Shrewsbury Town at The Racecourse extended the unbeaten start to five games and took Wrexham top of League One.

Although he wanted to give fringe players a much needed run-out in Tuesday's 2-1 home victory over Salford City in the Football League Trophy, some of Parkinson's regulars have been carrying knocks and were given a welcome breather.

With the game against promotion-favourites Birmingham taking place on Monday, it has given the Reds' boss longer to prepare and he had good news to report on the injury front.

"You use it to your benefit when the games are played," said Parkinson.

"Elliot Lee and Steven Fletcher needed some maintenance treatment on injuries they have been carrying and we have been able to clear those up.

"James McClean is fine while playing on Monday gives Andy Cannon and George Evans a little bit longer so the extra couple of days may make a difference for those players.

"We will utilise it to our benefit and pick the team we feel is right for this game."

Parkinson says star striker Paul Mullin continues to edge closer to full fitness.

The 29-year-old underwent spinal surgery in the middle of June to correct a long-term lower-back and hamstring issue, meaning he missed the start of the League One campaign.

After making his return last month, Mullin got three substitute appearances under his belt and was handed a first start of the season in the EFL Trophy group game against Salford, scoring a stunning goal to put the Reds ahead before being taken off in the 68th minute.

"I was very pleased with Paul's performance and how he looked physically," added Parkinson. "He looked in good shape.

"He has been progressing well. We have been able to gradually re-introduce him to the group but he's looking like he's there.

"The goal was a typical kind of goal he scores. He can score a lot of different types but we have seen that finish many times and it was great for us and great for him."
