MOLD will be looking to maintain their grip on top spot in North Wales Rugby’s Division One League tomorrow.
A 38-7 derby triumph at Wrexham made sure Mold became the first leaders of the season and more of the same will be the target as they welcome COBRA in their first home match.
Mold head coach Alex Jones said: “From our perspective, I don’t think the scoreline is a fair reflection on Wrexham.
“I thought they put us under a lot of pressure. We focused on our set-piece and our scrum.
“In the first half we took about eight penalties from the scrum. We didn’t expect to get the bonus point in the first game. To chase the bonus point in the first game was a dream for us.”
Jones admitted it is a big opening month for the side and he added: “We’re open and we’re honest. September for us is a big challenge. We have got another three big games coming up. As well as we played,we’ve got to park the bus and get into the next game.
“We have got plenty more to do and plenty more to offer. We are chasing wins, but it’s not going to change our outcome for the end of the year.”
Meanwhile, the only way is up for Wrexham, who head west to tackle Bethesda.
“Saturday was really disappointing,” admitted skipper Jack Harrison. “It was one of those days where nothing went for us and it was a tough day at the office.
“We’ve gone away and had some honest chats about where we need to improve this weekend and hopefully we can do that.
“The good thing about sport is you don’t have to wait too long to have another go and I’m confident we’ll see an improved performance in Bethesda on Saturday.”
Defending champions Nant Conwy play host to Ruthin, while Denbigh have home advantage against Llangefni.
There are away days for Pwllheli and Llandudno, against Bala and Caernarfon respectively.
Division Two North fixtures: Caernarfon Ath v Nant Conwy 2nds; Colwyn Bay v Abergele; Machynlleth v Dolgellau; Newtown v Welshpool.
Wrexham Athletic will look to make it two wins out of two in Division Three North East as they head to Denbigh seconds.
Top spot in the table is likely to go to Wrexham if they can follow up their opening day 43-5 triumph over Rhosllanerchrugog with another win.
Rhos play host to Llanidloes, while Flint welcome Ruthin Athletic and Llangollen-based Bro Gwernant head to COBRA Athletic.
RGC are hoping it’s a Super start to their season!
The newly-formed Super Rugby Cymru league gets underway tomorrow and RGC begin with a home match against Cardiff in Colwyn Bay.
Ahead of the season, RGC announced that Josh Leach is stepping up from his role as performance manager to become the development region’s director of rugby.
This role will see Leach oversee pathway alignment into the seniors, as well as encompassing the head coach duties. He will be assisted by Afon Bagshaw, as backs player/coach, and Saul Nelson, as forwards coach.
Leach told the RGC website: “RGC has been a huge part of my life having worked in various playing, coaching and management roles over the past 14 years.
“I’ve watched the vast majority of this squad develop as players as they’ve come through the pathway, and after a year setting up the emerging player programme and female player development centres, I’m looking forward to getting back on the pitch with the team.
“Our focus will be building a team and performances that we and the region can be proud of.”
Other fixtures: Carmarthen v Swansea; Ebbw Vale v Aberavon; Newport v Bridgend.
