LEWIS BRUNT has found opportunities limited at The Racecourse but the centre-back has no complaints with Wrexham flying high at the top of League One.

The 23-year-old joined the Reds from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee in the summer but wasn't named in the squad for the opening five league games which saw the Phil Parkinson's men emerge unbeaten.

After making his debut in last month's 4-2 defeat at Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup first round, Brunt got his second run-out when Wrexham beat Salford City 2-1 at home in Tuesday's Football League Trophy group game.

Max Cleworth, Eoghan O'Connell and Tom O'Connor, who formed the back-three when Wrexham clinched a second promotion in a row last season, have lined up in defence so far this term and Brunt understands he will have to play a waiting game with the Reds doing so well.

"I was pleased to get 90 minutes under my belt against Salford and obviously it's a good win for the boys," said Brunt, who played alongside Dan Scarr and Will Boyle at the back.

"It's a good feeling to play 90 minutes.

"I have had to be patient which is understandable; the lads that have started are absolutely flying so there is no animosity.

"The lads are doing amazing so it was just good to get on the pitch finally at The Racecourse.

"For me it is just being patient, training as hard as I can and as well as I can every day and when I get the opportunity, just try and impress. Do the best I can and try and prove why the gaffer has brought me here.

"Hopefully as time goes on I will play more and more but at the minute, the starting XI in the league is absolutely flying."

Parkinson rang the changes against Salford, naming a completely different side to the one that started Saturday's 3-0 cross-border derby win against arch rivals Shrewsbury.

Brunt, brought in by Parkinson after he helped Mansfield Town secure promotion from League Two alongside Wrexham during a successful loan spell in 2023-24, hailed the quality in the Racecourse ranks.

"The squad depth is amazing," said the defender.

"Even with the changes, the starting XI against Salford was stacked with quality.

"We have got 22 players that could all play in the starting XI."

Brunt has had to bide his time but he is enjoying being at a club currently sitting top of the third tier.

"I have settled in really well. It's a great bunch of lads here, there's not one lad in there who you would say is a rotten egg," he said.

"The changing room daily is amazing at the minute, everyone is smiling, and the atmosphere was amazing for the game at home against Shrewsbury."

Wrexham return to league action against Birmingham City at St Andrews on Monday and it's a fixture Brunt is looking forward to for obvious reasons.

"I can't wait for the game, especially being a Aston Villa fan," he added.

"I am from the local area so I am sure it will be a great atmosphere and a good game."
