PHIL PARKINSON rang the changes but Wrexham continued the winning habit by beating Salford City 2-1 at The Racecourse in their opening Football League Trophy group stage game.
The Reds' boss named a completely different team to the one that started Saturday's 3-0 derby victory over Shrewsbury which took Wrexham top of League One.
Paul Mullin, making his first start of the season, put Wrexham ahead with a stunning strike and although League Two outfit Salford equalised early in the second half, Will Boyle headed home a late winner to ensure a penalty shootout wasn't required.
Here's how the players rated:
CALLUM BURTON: Made one save of note in the first half to keep Wrexham ahead. 6
LEWIS BRUNT: A new-look back-three defended resolutely for large parts but Salford found a way through. 6
DAN SCARR: Salford weren't afraid to push forward but Wrexham dealt with the Ammies until they were undone following a decent move. 6
WILL BOYLE: Made a vital challenge in the first half to deny Salford and he scored the winning goal. 6
LUKE BOLTON: Kelly N'Mai was a tricky customer down his side but still got forward to support attacks when he could. 6
ANTHONY FORDE: Good to see him back from injury but Wrexham didn't control the game enough in the centre, although it was a make-shift midfield. 6
JAMES JONES: Wrexham were guilty of giving away possession too easy as Salford asked lots of questions. 6
SEBASTIAN REVAN: Played in midfield and he had a hand in the first goal, feeding Mullin who did the rest, and supplied corner for Boyle’s winner. 7
JACOB MENDY: Made his return from injury and showed glimpses down the left flank. 6
PAUL MULLIN: He’s back! Handed his first start of the season after three substitute appearances and scored a stunning goal to put Wrexham ahead. 7
MO FAAL: It was tough going. The strikers lacked service but Fall kept working hard for the cause. 6
SUBSTITUTES
MAX CLEWORTH: Slotted into the side and kept Salford out. 6
OLLIE RATHBONE: Fresh legs in midfield. 6
OLLIE PALMER: Put himself about when he came on. 6
HARRY ASHFIELD: Another first team opportunity for the youngster and he made a good impression. 7
RYAN BARNETT: A late substitute who pressed down the right. 6
