JACK MARRIOTT has made a flying start to the season but the striker won't rest on his laurels going into tonight's big game at Birmingham City.

The 30-year-old scored his third goal in five League One matches when he netted in Saturday's 3-0 cross-border derby win at home to Shrewsbury Town which maintained the unbeaten start and took Wrexham to the top of the table.

In the side because star striker Paul Mullin missed the start of the campaign after undergoing spinal surgery in the summer, Marriott has made the most of his opportunity.

He had to bide his time last season when he joined from Fleetwood Town on deadline day in the winter transfer window and only scored once but with Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher and Mo Faal competing for a place in attack, the frontman won't get carried away and knows he must continue to produce the goods when he plays.

"The competition within the squad is massive so it keeps everyone on their A-game and constantly looking over their shoulder," said Marriott.

"I have seen it from both sides.

"When I came in last season, Mulls was flying so you have to bide your time and then take your chance when you get it.

"I know that everyone is itching to play and we are itching to keep our place in the team.

"Everyone is working in the same direction and singing off the same hymn sheet. We all want what's best for the club."

Marriott has hit the ground running and is understandably brimming with confidence but so are his team-mates with Wrexham taking 13 points from a possible 15.

"I think it is throughout the whole of the squad," he said.

"When you are winning games - and on a personal note scoring goals - it is a really good place to be."

Marriott's latest goal came when Shrews defender Toto Nsiala failed to cut out Eoghan O'Connell's long ball over the top and with goalkeeper Toby Savin caught in no man's land after rushing off his line, he found an empty net.

"I don't know where the goalkeeper was going for that!" added Marriott, who won the League One Golden Boot in the 2017-18 season while at Peterborough

"It just opened up for me and it was nice to score but more importantly we've won another game at home which is great."
