WHAT a start to the North Wales rugby union season it has been for Mold.

They are the first leaders of Division One for the campaign on the back of their terrific 38-7 derby triumph at Wrexham.

Mold built-up an 8-0 advantage in the opening 20 minutes, while Wrexham finally hit back courtesy of a 23rd minute try from Sam Jones.

This was converted by Jacob Hughes, but it was all about the visitors for the remainder of the game and they had a try bonus point in the bag by the 65th minute.

Reece Le Tissier (2), Matthew Liversage, Caine Le Tissier and Scott Jones shared the Mold tries.

Seth Geary contributed 13 points with two conversions, two penalties and a late drop goal.

Defending champions Nant Conwy opened their defence in style with a 35-12 triumph away to Llandudno and Ruthin got the better of Vale of Clwyd rivals Denbigh 28-0 at Cae Ddol.

Bala pipped hosts COBRA 23-19 in the closest contest of the opening weekend, while Caernarfon prevailed 24-15 away to Pwllheli.

Elsewhere, it finished 21-12 in favour of Llangefni at home to Bethesda.

Mold Athletic began their Division Three (North East) campaign in superb fashion with their 96-14 home triumph versus Flint.

There was also a winning start for Wrexham Athletic, who defeated Rhosllanerchrugog 43-5.

The other match witnessed a 15-7 outcome in favour of Llanidloes at home to COBRA Athletic.
