WREXHAM manager Phil Parkinson knows a brilliant start to the season “doesn’t count for a great deal” after a 3-0 victory over rivals Shrewsbury took his side to the top of League One.
The Reds ran out convincing winners the cross border derby against the Shrews at The Racecourse and remain unbeaten after five games, taking 13 points from a possible 15.
With a number of fixtures in the third tier postponed because of international call-ups, Wrexham capitalised and took over at the summit from Stockport County who weren't in action.
Ollie Palmer and Elliot Lee netted to put Parkinson's men in control at the break and leading scorer Jack Marriott completed the scoring on the hour mark.
“It’s a great start for us, it really is,” said Parkinson. “We’re pleased but five games in now, we know it doesn’t count for a great deal.
“But we have to be pleased with our work so far this season and now we can take a deep breath."
Parkinson was delighted to come out on top in the derby and send Reds' supporters home happy.
“It means a lot for our supporters," he said.
"You could sense that in the build-up to the game, and I said to the players beforehand, there were a lot of people talking about the game everywhere you went, they were mentioning the rivalry. So it’s a special feeling when you win a derby game.
"We are going to enjoy it but we will reflect and look forward to Tuesday as well."
