PHIL PARKINSON believes his Wrexham side are already showing they can compete at the top end of League One after winning 2-0 at Peterborough but he won't allow his players to get carried away.

First-half goals from Jack Marriott and Max Cleworth maintained the unbeaten start to the season, with the Reds taking 10 points from the opening four games.

Victory at London Road took Wrexham up to second in the table on the same number of points as leaders Stockport County who were promoted alongside Parkinson's men last term.

"The lads are on a high because we said this was another test for us and we had to show that we are serious contenders at this level and we’ve done it in really good style," said the Reds' boss.

"Four games in, it is still early. It is more myself and my staff judging us as a team where we think we are at this level and at the moment we are obviously pleased.

"We know we have got work to do but we can't be too disappointed.

"We have gone away to Bolton and drawn and won at Peterborough - two teams who were in the play-offs last year."

In the opening month of the campaign, Wrexham won both home games against Wycombe Wanderers (3-2) and Reading (3-0) and after drawing 0-0 at Bolton, celebrated a first away victory over Peterborough who are managed by former Reds' captain Darren Ferguson.

Parkinson said it was important for his side to register a first three points haul on their travels as soon as possible.

"You always want to get that first goal away from home and that first away win and we have been able to do that," he added.

"When the fixtures came out, I think we all looked at Bolton away and Peterborough away as tough games.

"But we stood strong as a team today. The strength of this group is their character and their mentality.

"We have got some strong characters out there and you could see it - it stood out so strongly."
