PHIL PARKINSON says James McClean is a good choice to don the captain's armband but the Reds' boss says he has a team of leaders on the pitch.

With Luke Young and Ben Tozer departing The Racecourse at the end of last season. Parkinson was looking for a new skipper heading into Wrexham's League One campaign.

Former Ireland international McClean and star striker Paul Mullin both led the team out last term when Young and Tozer were absent.

McClean has captained the side in every game this season with Mullin, who underwent spinal surgery in the middle of June to correct a long-term lower-back and hamstring issue, making his first appearance of the campaign as a second half substitute in Saturday's 3-0 home win against Reading which extended the unbeaten start in the third tier.

"We have got a leadership group in the squad which me and Steve Parkin liaise with - Mark Howard is in that as well," said the Reds' boss ahead of tomorrow's clash against Peterborough United at London Road.

"We have got a team of captains which is what we want.

"James has worn the armband which he did last season and he is a real leader for us.

"He is another player who sets the tone in the game in terms of the way we want to press and the way we want to be physical."

Wrexham go into the game at Peterborough - managed by former Reds' captain Darren Ferguson - on the back of Saturday's 3-0 home win against Reading which made it seven points from a possible nine, and Parkinson is hoping to build on that result against the Posh.

"It was a really good all-round performance from us," he added.

"Reading had some really threatening players but we handled it terrifically well.

"There was a real steeliness about us and on the back of that, we played some great football.

"It was a good test for us and we came through it well. Now it is about the preparation being right and going down to Peterborough obviously full of confidence but respectful of them being an established team at this level."
