A TRIO of Wrexham athletes have become national champions.

Swansea played host to the Welsh junior championships and there were plenty of success stories amongst Wrexham AAC members.

Thomas Williams’ successful summer continued as he won the U20 men’s hammer thanks to his effort of 63.03-metres.

Two club members scooped a brace of Welsh titles in the U13 boys’ category.

Tomasi Fidow won the shot put (9.22m) and the discus, the latter with a personal best of 24.54-metres. During a busy event, he was also fourth in the javelin (22.46m).

There was also joy for Spencer Jones, who produced an effort of 29.25m to triumph in the javelin, while a personal best of 6-04.2 saw him cross the line first in the 1k walk.

Jones was also runner-up in the discus (20.71m), fourth in the shot put (7.03m) and he produced a personal best of 5-00.16 to finish eighth in the 1500-metres.

In the same age group, Freddie Cunningham cleared 1.40m to claim the runners-up spot in the high jump and he supplied a personal best of 4.03m for fifth spot in the long jump.

Over in the U13 girls’ class, Bethan Roberts’ effort of 18.28-metres saw her finish second in the javelin, while she also competed in the 1500-metres (5-48.58), shot put (6.26m), 800-metres (2-43.08) and long jump (3.02m).

There were two third-placed finishes in the U17 women’s section for Lucy Jones, in the 300-metres (41.31) and with a personal best of 10.58m in the triple jump.

A special event took place in memory of Peter Norman as the Ponderosa in Llangollen played host to the Norman Conquest 12k fell race.

The race raised £100 for the RNLI, which was a favourite charity for Peter in view of his past association with the sea.

Charles Ashley, the race organiser, was happy with the warm breeze which appeared to be coming from Lanzarote, the scene of many of Peter’s racing exploits at Club La Santa.

Wrexham AAC’s Linda Jones (pictured left) was first W55 and 23rd overall in 1-41.29.

Oliver Edwards competed in the Charnwood open meeting, in Loughborough, where he clocked 52.34 in the senior men’s 400-metres.

At the Chirk Castle relay, ‘Girlstriders’ Christine Cammillare, Fiona Robinson and Steph Salusbury completed the six-mile multi-terrain event in 62:29.

Deestriders’ colleagues Fred Aird, Paul Lewtey and Andy Wainwright also took part in other teams.

There was a strong showing from Wrexham AAC members at the most recent Erddig parkrun, spear-headed by winner Luke Northall (17.19).

He was followed by Tony Forster (23rd in 24.17), Jonathan Davies (40th in 25.42), Peter Hughes (67th in 27.06), Colin Jones (77th in 27.56) and Karl Moore (108th in 29.45).

Then, on Sunday, it’s the Birchwood 10k in Warrington, the Caernarfon 10k and the Trafford AC medal meeting in Bury.
