CO-CHAIRMAN Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in attendance as Wrexham made a brilliant start to the new League One season.

Back in the third tier for the first time in 19 years after winning back-to-back promotions, Phil Parkinson’s men beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 at The Racecourse.

Max Cleworth struck after just nine minutes to put the Reds on the way and Jack Marriott’s stunner made it 2-0 just before the half-hour mark.

Wycombe pulled a goal back after the break but substitute Steven Fletcher made sure off an opening day victory for Wrexham when he netted late on, although the Reds were made to sweat as the visitors struck again with a minute to go.

It could have been easier for Wrexham after going two-nil up but Parkinson will be delighted with three points.

Wycombe had the first chance with only 80 seconds on the clock when Kieran Sadlier’s shot was easily saved by goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after Elliot Lee gifted the visitors possession.

But Wrexham began to up the tempo and Andy Cannon's effort was blocked by a defender which rebounded off another Wycombe player for a Reds corner.

After a delay due to a Wycombe injury, Wrexham took the lead from the resulting corner.

Lee sent in the set-piece which was flicked on by a Wycombe player under captain James McClean’s challenge and Cleworth converted from close range.

The Reds continued to press and Ryan Barnett’s half-volley was saved by keeper Nathan Bishop while Tom O’Connor made a vital block to thwart Richard at the other end.

A quick counter attack by Wrexham led to Ollie Palmer’s effort being deflected behind but the Reds made it 2-0 in the 29th minute.

Palmer flicked ball off to Marriott who chested it down and volleyed past Bishop into the top corner of the net from just inside area

It was an early contender for goal of the season on the opening day but Wycombe finished the first half strongly.

Kone failed to hit the target after rare sloppy play by Eoghan O'Connell while a corner wasn’t cleared and Josh Scowen hit the bar.

Wycombe went close again before the interval but it was all Wrexham at the start of the second half.

McClean was only just too high with a header while Marriott was put through on goal but Bishop pulled off a good save.

However, Wycombe reduced the deficit on 58 minutes.

There was a spot of pin-ball in the area and the ball fell for Kone who fired past Okonkwo.

Danger-man Kone went close again but Wrexham reclaimed their two-goal advantage with seven minutes remaining.

Lee was denied by Bishop and Fletcher curled the ball home to the delight of the Wrexham fans.

Wycombe made it 3-2 in the 89th minute when former Wales international Sam Vokes headed home a corner but Wrexham held on.
