GEORGE DOBSON revealed the lure of playing for Wrexham was too good to turn down
Midfielder Dobson is lining up to make his Reds’ debut as the League One season kicks off at The STōK Racecourse tomorrow where Wycombe Wanderers are the opposition for a 5.30pm kick off.
Dobson was supposed to kicking off a new adventure in Hungary with Fehérvár having signed a pre-contract agreement last January while he was at Charlton Athletic.
But things have changed and now he’s become part of the footballing story that the whole world is talking about.
“I signed a pre-contract agreement with Fehérvár in January but my circumstances changed at home and it was agreed to mutually terminate the contract,” he said.
That’s when Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson - Dobson’s former boss at Sunderland - nipped in to seal the deal.
“I knew the gaffer - I was a player for him at Sunderland and I also with Steve (Reds assistant manager Steve Parkin).
“That was another selling point and the deal was done 48 hours later. It was meant to be.”
Dobson (pictured below) is one of six new signings - including goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo who has turned his loan move into a permanent one - who have bolstered a Reds side who have celebrated back-to-back promotions.
Describing himself as a ‘very energetic player, comfortable on the ball, a ball-winner and a leader’ Dobson got his first taste of The Racecourse last weekend as Wrexham warmed up for tomorrow’s opener with a 1-0 victory over Fleetwood Town.
“It was nice to play here last week and to embrace the whole atmosphere,” added the 27-year-old Romford-born midfielder, who said teaming up with the squad for the pre-season tour of North American was a perfect time to bond with his new team-mates.
“There’s so much positivity and you can feel the momentum and it was fascinating to see how many people were supporting Wrexham out there.
“Even walking in the cities and getting recognised, it can only be good for the club to have such support.”
Supporters will be out in their numbers tomorrow.
The first game of the season is one nobody wants to miss, including owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who have again been praised by Reds boss Phil Parkinson for their commitment to the Reds’ cause.
“Rob spent a lot of time with us on tour,” said Parkinson. “And Ryan came out to Vancouver despite his incredible schedule.”
Parkinson, who looks set to go with the side that started last week’s win against Fleetwood, also revealed that star striker Paul Mullin was back ‘running’ on the training ground yesterday.
Mullin won’t rush his way back but he’ll be at the game tomorrow and cheering on like the rest of the 12,500-plus crowd.
“The support they’ve shown over the last three years has been brilliant.”
