WREXHAM’S new signing Dan Scarr has praised Wayne Rooney for not standing in his way in making what he calls his ‘exciting’ move to The Racecourse.

Centre back Scarr signed a deal with Wrexham last Friday after leaving Plymouth Argyle where ex-England and Manchester United captain Rooney is now manager.

Scarr, who the Reds paid an undisclosed fee for, said: “He was unbelievable and I really can’t speak more highly of him.

“He came in earlier this year and he’s so down to earth and gave me all his support.

“He knew I was interested in a move to Wrexham and he told me that he was never going to stand in my way even though he wanted me to stay.

“There was no nastiness whatsoever and that made things much easier.”

Rooney has also commented on Scarr’s move and he told BBC Radio Devon: “For Dan it was a good opportunity for him, for his family as well.

“We had a good chat about it and I think sometimes the time is right for both parties.

“I think he’s been a really good servant to the club, but the time was right for him and maybe for the club as well, and now it’s an opportunity for us to bring someone else in.”

Scarr made more than 100 appearances in three years for The Pilgrims where he celebrated promotion to the Championship.

That’s something he wants to do with Wrexham and he’s desperate to play at The Racecourse.

“It’s a ground I’ve never played at so I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere there,” added Scarr, who was linked with a move to his home-town club, Birmingham City, in the summer.

“There was nothing in it. I came back home to Birmingham and people were thinking I was going to sign.”

As for playing his part in Wrexham’s next journey up the Football League ladder, Scarr, who has also played for Walsall and Saturday’s opening day opponent, Wycombe Wanderers, wants to add another promotion to the list.

“That’s the reason I came here,” added Scarr, who can’t wait to meet the club’s famous Hollywood owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

“It’s such an exciting club to join.

“I haven’t spoke to the owners yet but I’ve watched the majority of the documentary and it’s a journey I want to part of.”
