FUMPA MWANDWE and Tyler Berry netted on their debuts as Connah’s Quay Nomads opened their domestic campaign in winning fashion.

Neil Gibson’s charges hit the ground running with a 3-0 second round success away to dogged Buckley Town.

Gibson told Nomads’ YouTube channel: “I think 3-0 sounds probably more comfortable than it was. All credit to Buckley. I thought they put up a really good fight today.

“Really brave in how they go about it, tried to keep three players high up the pitch as often as possible, so when they turn the ball over in any transition, they’ve got a real threat when they turn the ball over and then send it forward really quickly.

“A threat from set-pieces, you know, a lot of height and physicality in the group and they work really hard for each other.”

Mwandwe grabbed Nomads’ opener in the 12th minute via a header from close range.

Buckley’s Liam Driscoll forced George Ratcliffe into a save late in the first half, while the hosts made a promising start to the second half.

Scott McHarrie’s powerful strike was blocked and Brad Knight had a couple of headers saved.

Quay had some breathing space on 77 minutes.

Jordan Pownall’s cross was diverted into his own net by Callum Humphries. Berry added the third goal in stoppage time.

Buckley boss Asa Hamilton was left to rue missed opportunities on the day.

He told the club’s X site: “Second half, we were the better team by an absolute mile.

“We’ve had chance after chance, they’ve had a couple cleared off the line and they went.

“They were rattled for 30 minutes, but we’ve got to take our chances and, again, we haven’t.

“Four chances in the first half, four chances in the second half and 3-0 flatters them.”

Colwyn Bay departed the competition with a 2-0 loss at home to Cymru Premier League side Aberystwyth Town.

Michael Wilde’s side fell behind to a first half penalty from Niall Flint.

Aber made sure of their progress via John Owen’s strike a quarter-of-an-hour from time.

Wilde told the club’s YouTube channel: “It’s very hard to come out here and say you’re pleased with certain elements when you get beat.

“However, we’ve got to look at it from a performance point of view and it was considerably better than last week and we dominated a lot of the football and there’s things that we’re doing throughout the week which is starting to show a little bit of fruition going forward.”

Yesterday, Caernarfon beat Newtown 3-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
