WREXHAM rounded off an unbeaten pre-season with a 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town.

A crowd of 6,376 watched on as the Reds finished their pre-season preparations at the SToK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon.

After a positive first half, with Jack Marriott having a number of chances to open the scoring, the deadlock was finally broken by Max Cleworth in the 70th minute.

A ball into the box fell to the feet of the centre-back who smashed home into a half-empty net to give Phil Parkinson’s side the victory.

The Reds enjoyed a successful pre-season tour to America and Canada, recording draws against Premier League sides Bournemouth and Chelsea, before running out 4-1 winners against Vancouver Whitecaps.

They returned the SToK Cae Ras for the first time since the end of April in positive fashion. Former Fleetwood man Marriott had a host of chances in the first half and could’ve had a hattrick inside half an hour.

In the eighth minute, Tom O’Connor’s fizzed ball in was flicked on nicely by Sam Dalby into Marriott’s path, but he couldn’t get his effort on target and it fired just over.

His best chance came after 23 minutes, O’Connor again the provider as his arced ball down the channel was pounced on by Marriott who bared down on the Fleetwood goal, but David Harrington did well to stick out a leg and deny the hosts an opener.

Minutes later and he found himself in front of goal again, but his shot from the edge of the area passed just by the post.

Parkinson’s side looked sharp throughout the first half, with Ryan Barnett causing issues down the right and new signing George Dobson looking assured in the middle.

However they couldn’t find the breakthrough and it remained 0-0 at the break.

Charlie Adam’s half-time words worked as his side came out much brighter in the second period. Mark Helm and Ray Graydon both tested out Arthur Okonkwo, who was playing his first game back at the Racecourse after penning a permanent deal at the club.

It was Wrexham who scored the game’s only goal after 71 minutes. Following a corner, the ball was played back into the box by Tom O'Connor and rebounded off the crossbar into the path of Cleworth, who fired home.

It was a solid performance for Wrexham who kick-off their League One campaign at home to Wycombe Wanderers next Saturday.
