EOGHAN O’CONNELL just loves playing at the “rocking” Racecourse!
Centre back O’Connell, who has helped Wrexham to gain back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club’s history, says the home support is “incredible” as the Reds prepare for their first League One campaign in close to two decades.
The STōK Cae Ras is sure to be packed when Phil Parkinson’s side get the new season underway against Wycombe Wanderers on August 10 and there’ll be a decent turnout there tomorrow for the Reds final pre-season friendly at home to Fleetwood Town.
“The support at home is, honestly, incredible,” O’Connell told reporters in Vancouver during the club’s North American tour.
“I get people come over from Ireland to watch games and they can’t wait to come back after their first time.
“I don’t think it would be the biggest ground in the league, but it’s rocking every week.
“It’s a really great place to play. Playing at the Racecourse is something I really enjoy. I love it.”
O’Connell, who captained the Reds to a 4-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps to conclude a successful tour, where they also held Premier League duo Bournemouth and Chelsea to draws, says it is up to the experienced players to make sure everyone remains level-headed when things don’t go to plan during the forthcoming season.
“I think last year was kind of a bit different to the National League campaign, where obviously we had one or two runs last year where things weren’t going well,” he said.
“And, I think that’s the job, I suppose, of the experienced players then to make sure everyone stays level-headed.
“I think, you know, when you’re winning all the time, everyone comes in and it’s great, but I think the real test is how you can be when things aren’t going great and can you stay level-headed and keep everyone together?
“And I think that’s what we did really well last year and even the year before.
“I think, just stay on an even keel and keep trying to perform well and, then, I think the results follow that.”
With star striker Paul Mullin still out injured, Jack Marriott will again be looking to impress against his former club tomorrow.
Marriott scored twice on tour, including one against Chelsea.
“What an experience playing against a size of the club of Chelsea,” Marriott (pictured above) told the club’s YouTube channel
“It was a great ball from Dalbs (Sam Dalby), and if you hit it low and hard across the keeper, it’s always got a chance and thankfully it found the back of the net.”
