PHIL PARKINSON says his Wrexham team has a real identity as the Reds prepare for their final friendly encounter ahead of the return to League One.

Wrexham will ply their trade in the third tier for the first time in almost two decades over the course of the forthcoming season, beginning with a big home clash against Wycombe Wanderers on August 10.

Back-to-back promotions mean the club are on the up under the stewardship of co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, while a three-match tour of North America last week proved to be a successful one.

Reflecting on the importance of the tour, boss Parkinson told the club’s YouTube channel: “It was good to integrate the new players.

“Going through the stuff with the lads in terms of what we did last year and the key elements of our game we need to implement again and improve on and the lads have really listened and they’ve taken everything on board,

“I think you’ve seen over the three games a team with a real identity and we played some really good football.”

Wrexham were back in training yesterday and fans will get to see them at The STōK Racecourse tomorrow when they host Fleetwood Town in their final pre-season contest.

The Reds concluded their North American tour with a 4-1 victory versus Vancouver Whitecaps in front of a crowd of almost 35,000 at BC Place.

Goals from new signing Seb Revan, James McClean, Elliot Lee and Jordan Davies saw Wrexham through to a comfortable victory.

Parkinson was delighted with the performance against Vancouver and added: “We switched the play, got our wing-backs in very dangerous positions and put some great crosses in the box and committed players in there as well and that’s really important that the wing-backs are getting in like Bolts (Luke Bolton) did the other night and like Seb’s got in today and, obviously, Elliot and Jordy for their goals.

“So, really important but just, generally, a good one-and-a-half weeks and, like I said, these games are never easy, because there’s a lot of spotlight on us and we have a responsibility to perform and I feel we’ve done that really well.”

Wrexham began the tour with a 1-1 draw against Premier Leaguers Bournemouth and they followed this up by drawing 2-2 with Chelsea, courtesy of goals from Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott.

“I’ve got to be pleased with the three games and the tour,” added Parkinson. “We’ve had three good workouts in the matches and that’s really important because, obviously, in between, we haven’t trained that hard, because we’ve just been getting the lads to recover from the games.

“So (Saturday) was work day and the lads have put in another good effort and produced an excellent win.”
