WREXHAM WOMEN made history as they brought the curtain down on their American tour.

Steve Dale’s Reds lost out 7-0 in their meeting with Portland Thorns Academy at Providence Park, Portland, Oregon.

The final match of the 2024 Wrex Coast Tour saw Wrexham smash their previous record attendance of 9,511 fans, who turned out to see the Reds defeat Connah’s Quay Nomads last year.

There were a total of 10,379 supporters at Providence Park as Wrexham continued their preparations for the forthcoming Adran Premier League campaign.

It was a big occasion for Wrexham’s players, turning out at a setting that has played host to some of the best players in the sport.

Thorns enjoyed a bright start to the encounter and they had one goal chalked off for offside, while they were handed an excellent chance to break the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty.

However, the spot kick was fired over the top.

The young Portland side continued to have the better of things and they grabbed four goals to build-up a comfortable advantage by the time the half-time whistle was sounded.

In a blow to the Reds, TJ Dickens had to be stretchered off the pitch at the end of the first half and she was replaced by Keren Allen.

The likes of Delyth Morgan, Amber Lightfoot and Ava Suckley were introduced off the bench for the season half.

Wrexham stuck at their task and they continued to battle, but three further goals arrived in the second period, the last of which came in the final minute.

In a post on X, Wrexham Women said: “Memories to last for a lifetime.

“A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us both in-person and worldwide over the past two weeks.”

This defeat concluded a testing tour for the Reds, who are preparing for their second season in the Welsh top flight.

Wrexham’s tour opened with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Socal FC while there was an improved showing just 48 hours later when the Reds lost out 6-1 to Tigres Femenil U19s.

Carra Jones was on target with the Reds’ goal.
