A WREXHAM athlete is a European champion.

The European U18 championships were staged in Slovakia, where Wrexham AAC’s Thomas Williams, representing Ireland, took part.

An effort of 73.95-metres saw him triumph in the hammer.

There was a big turnout for the Helena Tipping 10k race in Wrexham, including 20 Buckley Runners sporting the club’s newly-designed vests.

Ricky Challinor was the first Buckley competitor home in 32.04, followed by Josh Cullen (33.23), Anthony Davidson (35.40), Ben Williams (36.04), Gerard Coleman (38.32), second FV35 Jennifer Rambaldi (39.28), Graham Bishop (39.47), David Woodley (41.29) and Jane Doughton (41.45).

Connor Rogers was the leading Wrexham AAC racer, clocking 31.42 for 14th, ahead of Ryan Davis (24th in 32.48), James Roberts (35th in 33.49), Scott Nixon (37th in 33.57), first M55 Darren Rowlands (64th in 36.28), Thomas Spence (91st in 38.21), Thomas Povah (105th in 38.55) and Gareth Chaloner (112th in 39.05).

Deestriders Donna Griffiths (47.45) and Andy Wainwright (51.49) both produced personal bests, and they were joined in Wrexham by Mike Salusbury (49.49), Rhian Lloyd (53.18), Darren Low (54.02) and Justin Evans (59.20).

A strong home showing was seen as Wrexham staged the latest Cheshire track and field league fixture.

In the U11 girls section, Seren Fidow (8.58m) was second in the soft javelin, while Olivia Dixon (2.41m) was fourth in the long jump.

Turning to the U11 boys, George Hughes was third in the 600m in 2-04.8, with Rory Dixon was third in the long jump (2.97m), while Ellis Jones finished third in the B long jump (2.71m) and 600m (2-17.5).

Over in the U13 girls category, Grace Hughes (19.36m) triumphed in the javelin, Bethan Roberts was third in the 1200m (4-29.5) and won the B javelin (17.98m), Katy McGlynn (1.25m) took third in the high jump and fourth spot went to Georgina Phillips (5-08.9) in the B 1200m.

Spencer Jones won the U13 boys javelin (31.00m) and was runner-up in the long jump (4.04m) and 800m (2-29.4), while Jake McGlynn (32.5) crossed the line fourth in the 200m and Tomasi Fidow was victorious in the B javelin (20.89m).

Over in the U15 girls section, Annabelle Jones (23.03m) was top of the pile in the discus, with Evie Hughes (2-39.3) runner-up in the 800m, while Joe Perkins won the U15 boys 100m (12.6) and high jump (1.55m).

Sally Jones (14.98m) was second in the senior women’s discus and amongst the senior men, Oliver Edwards (23.3) triumphed in the 200m, Neil Edwards (30.12m) won the discus and Evan Williams (6.01m) was victorious in the long jump.

At the International Snowdon Mountain Race, three runners from Buckley bravely took it on with Jez Brown first home in 1-28.13, which was good enough for second MV50 on the day. Stephen Bellis (2-05.54) and Caroline Caffery (2-10.44) also competed. Wrexham’s Ally Hughes crossed the line 60th in 1-26.16, followed by clubmates Linda Jones (353rd in 2-06.59) and Charles Ashley (512th in 2-28.38).

At the Tolkien trail race, in Clitheroe, first W50 Amanda Bailey had a story to tell after finishing 37th in 56.39.

Christine Cammillare (58.50) was the leading Deestrider at the Gyrn Gallop multi terrain race, where she was joined by Nige Parr (1-01.02), Paul Lewtey (1-02.05) and Fred Aird (1-12.52).

Mike Norris completed his 25th parkrun and Sue McIndoe her 150th at Erddig.
