PHIL PARKINSON described it as a “good night’s work” after Wrexham kicked off the three-game pre-season tour to North America by drawing 1-1 against AFC Bournemouth.

The Reds took the lead at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, California, just before half-time when James McClean’s corner was headed into his own net by James Hill.

Bournemouth, who finished 12th in the Premier League last season, levelled eight minutes into the second half and it finished all-square despite both teams having chances.

Parkinson, who changed the entire team just after the hour mark, said it was a good test in hot conditions as Wrexham continue preparing for the new League One campaign.

“It was a really good work-out for us,” Parkinson told the club’s YouTube channel.

“Very hot, difficult conditions against a really good side. Bournemouth have got some very good players as they showed last year in the Premier League but we went toe-to-toe with them.

“Physically it was a great test. The lads who played 60 minutes, the data was right up there where we need it to be as we go into three weeks until the start of the season.

“I thought the lads who came on were excellent as well. We had some really good chances to win the game but all in all, it’s a really good night’s work for us and I am very pleased.

“We are not used to playing in that heat, and neither are Bournemouth, but both teams handled it really well and played a very competitive game, and there was entertainment there as well.

“Sometimes in pre-season there’s not much goalmouth action but as the game grew, there was chances at both ends but we probably had the better ones to have won the game.”
