TAKING one game at a time is a motto all football clubs adopt but Connah’s Quay Nomads defender John Disney admits he’s thinking about next week’s second leg as his side prepare to take on NK Bravo in the Europa Conference on Thursday evening.

Nomads are in Ljubljana to play the Slovenian side in a first round qualifier and they will be aiming to keep their hopes alive ahead of the return match at Bangor’s Nantporth Stadium next week

“We’ve got to make sure we’re still in for that second leg game,” said Disney, a veteran of 17 appearances in Europe for Nomads, who won the Welsh Cup and finished runners-up to The New Saints in the Cymru Premier League last season.

“It will be a tough game but we’re always confident and our planning has been meticulous.

“We’ve had a good pre-season and I think all of the running’s done now so it’s case of cracking on with the games and we’ll be up for it against Bravo.”

Nomads trained at the 2,308 capacity Siska Sports Park last night and with the temperatures likely to hit 30 degrees at kick off time, Nomads manager Neil Gibson wishes he could have taken the good old British weather with them.

“It will be hot out there; we’d much rather it be cold and wet like it is over here,” said Gibson, who can call upon new arrivals George Ratcliffe, Elliott Dugan, Anderson Pinto, Ben Maher and former New Saints skipper Chris Marriott.

Both Gibson and Disney are delighted to have Marriott in the Nomads camp after the former Wrexham trainee ended his 15-year stint at Park Hall.

During his time with TNS, Marriott lifted 12 Cymru Premier titles, seven Welsh Cups and seven Welsh League Cups as well as making more than 40 appearances in Europe.

“He’s the Welsh Premier League’s most decorated player and we wanted him at Nomads,” said Gibson. “The most pleasing thing is that he wanted a new challenge and he wanted to do that with us.”

Disney said: “It’s great to get Chris. He has so much experience and won so much during his time at TNS. He’s a tremendous signing for us.”

Nomads begin their season without some regulars from their last campaign that ended with a 2-1 Welsh Cup Final win over TNS.

Josh Williams, who scored the winner at Newport in April, has been snapped up by Tranmere Rovers while top scorer Jordan Davies has moved north of the border to Greenock Morton.

Ryan Harrington will also be playing in Scotland next season with Cove Rangers while keeper Andy Firth has taken up a goalkeeping coach role with Steve Gerrard’s Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.

“There’s been changes to the side,” said Gibson. “We’ve had a high turnover of players, which isn’t ideal, but we’re fully focused on trying to win on Thursday.

“We had a good game against Dundee United on Saturday and we’re fully prepared for the game.”
