A NORTH EAST WALES competitor has stood toe-to-toe with the very best boxers in Europe... and triumphed!

Llay ABC's Milwyn Lloyd gained victory in his class at the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament in Hungary.

Not only that, but Lloyd claimed the title for the best boxer at the whole event.

Mark Lewis, Lloyd's coach at Llay ABC, said: "I'm so proud to see Milwyn doing so well, having trained him from the age of nine and witnessed how much he's developed.

"Milwyn is having a good season, only last month winning the national championships to become Welsh champion in the youth 67kg (class).

"He then went on to box in Hungary, drawing the Swedish number one first and he made a big statement by getting the KO in the first round."

Next up for Lloyd was a bout with a Hungarian fighter and it was the talented Welsh boxer who came out on top by a unanimous decision.

Lewis added: "He next faced a very tough opponent from Uzbekistan, who had also been making some noise in the tournament by stopping his opponents, but Milwyn proved to be too quick and skilful, worrying his corner and forcing them to throw the towel in at the end of round two."

Adding to what was a hugely successful event for Welsh boxers, Lloyd secured the gold medal and the best boxer award out of 154 competitors.

"Seven boxers travelled to Hungary and five are returning with medals after three tough fights across the tournament," said Welsh Boxing on Facebook.

"Welsh boxers continue to deliver medals on the international stage. A massive well done to the boxers and their clubs."

Lloyd will be seeking further success when he competes for Wales in the Tri Nations event next month.

The youth and junior Three Nations event will take place at the Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff on June 8 and 9.
