MASON Roberts, of Maelor ABC, claimed a brilliant victory to take the Welsh schools’ 54kg vest in Cardiff.
The referee stopped his bout with Gwent ABC’s Brandon Dark in the second round, confirming victory for Roberts, who was competing in the national event for the first time.
Maelor ABC’s Butch Jones said: “Brandon started very strong and tried to push Mason back, but Mason stood his ground and fired back to match him.
“In the second round Mason out-boxed Brandon and was the stronger with the referee giving Brandon a standing count.
“Then Mason put the pressure on and the referee stopped the contest.
“It was Mason’s first time in the championships. I and all at the Maelor ABC would like to congratulate him and thank our sponsors.”
Roberts’ preparations for the championships turned out to be spot-on.
Ahead of the competition, Jones said: “Myself and the Maelor team are quite confident.
“He has trained very hard for this and has had the right attitude in his approach. Myself and all at the Maelor ABC support him and wish him well.”
