FLINT MOUNTAIN celebrated a famous double in the North East Wales FA’s finals extravaganza.
But their bid for a treble didn’t materialise after their Ardal North West League clash at Y Felinhelli - 20 hours after they had beaten Mold Alex 3-2 in the NEWFA Cup - was cancelled as a mark of respect for home manager Euron Davies, who tragically died at the age of 46.
The Gwynedd club posted a statement that read: “It is very sad we have to announce the news of the sudden death of our manager, Euron
“His vision brought a very prosperous period for the club during his transformative period as manager.
“A solid, wise manager and a friend to everyone. And his humour was colourful through it all. Our debt as a club is huge to him.
“A great loss to the club, the village and to all his family and friends.”
Flint boss Aden Shannon described the news as ‘so sad’ and that his thoughts went out to Euron’s family.
The sad news put a dampener on Flint’s fabulous 24 hours that first saw them lift the cup on Friday night.
Goals in the opening 15 minutes from Lloyd Ellams and Jack Sconce put Flint in control but Henry Nash pulled one back before the break and Mold, for whom managers Mike Cunningham and Steve Monk were involved for the last time, levelled on 58 minutes through Sam Duffy.
But former Chester star Ellams turned out the match-winner by grabbing the all important goal 12 minutes from time in front of a 625 crowd.
“It was a great win and fully deserved - just as the reserves victory was on Saturday,” said Shannon.
Mountain’s second string triumphed in a seven-goal thriller against hosts Ruthin Town in the Reserves Cup final - which was one of 13 finals played over the weekend at Ruthin Town’s Memorial Playing Fields.
Two-goal James Dunsheath grabbed an extra-time winner for Flint, whose other scorers were Ben Lawrence and substitute Wayne Edwards. Sean Kell, Gruffudd Hughes-Owen and an own goal had kept Ruthin in the hunt.
Penyffordd Lions were also celebrating a double.
A week after lifting the Premier Cup, the Lions had to make more room in their trophy cabinet to show off the Horace Wynne Cup.
They beat North East Wales League rivals Mynydd Isa 3-1 thanks to a double from Ben Hughes and one from Liam Hughes. Sam Wainwright hit back from the spot for Isa, whose second string lost 2-0 to Hawarden Rangers in yesterday’s Veterans Cup final.
Former Wrexham and Chester striker Jamie Reed and Alan Dawson got the goals.
