TOM O'CONNOR says the thrashing at the hands of Stockport was the low point in Wrexham's successful season but he hailed the response to that heavy League Two defeat at Edgeley Park.

The Hatters triumphed 5-0 on September 23 in the first meeting between the rivals since the 2021-22 season when Dave Challinor's side pipped Wrexham to the National League title.

But Phil Parkinson’s men reacted to that big loss by embarking on an 11 game unbeaten run in all competitions, and with both teams among the frontrunners going into the run-in, they've finished the job off and clinched promotion to League One.

The sides lock horns once again on Saturday when Wrexham host champions Stockport at The Racecourse in a final-day showdown and O'Connor would love to avenge the hefty defeat earlier in the campaign.

"We have played Stockport a few times over the last few years and they are not too far up the road either so there is a bit of recent history," he said.

"Obviously this season when we went to Stockport they have us a good hammering.

"They are one-up on us this season, that's for sure, but we looking to rectify that on Saturday for ourselves and put in a good performance, and show that we are not worthy of a 5-0 loss.

"That was probably the worst day of the season - it does stick out a bit and we haven't forgotten about that game."

Wrexham picked up eight wins and three draws in the 11-game unbeaten run after losing at Stockport and O'Connor praised the players' response to the set-back.

"Maybe we should thank Stockport for giving us a bit of rocket!" he said. "It is funny how it works.

"It was definitely a rocket that day but maybe it did us good in the long term."

Wrexham thrashed Forest Green Rovers 6-0 on April 13 to secure a top-three finish with two games to spare, the same day that Stockport booked their spot in League One by beating Morecambe 2-0.

The Hatters have since been crowned champions while Wrexham are celebrating back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club's history.

The pressure is off on Saturday but O'Connor wants to go into the summer break with one more win.

"It is good that both of us are up there now and there is nothing to play for as such on the last day," said O'Connor.

"I don't think either team would want to go into the last game needing points.

"It definitely takes the pressure off a bit but we still want to win.

"It is not nice losing games, no matter what the circumstances; you much rather win and finish the season on a high than go out with a sad face."

Wrexham would finish runners-up if they win and Mansfield drop points at seventh placed Barrow who are looking to book their play-off spot but being promoted is all that matters to O'Connor.

"I don't think it makes a lot of difference to be honest, whether we are second or third," he added. "We've been promoted!"
