WREXHAM’S key markswoman in last weekend’s big Welsh Cup quarter-final clash was “buzzing” after helping her side to victory.

Libby Mackenzie, making her 50th appearance for the team, came off the bench to grab the decisive second goal in the Reds’ 2-0 triumph over Briton Ferry Llansawel.

After the contest, Mackenzie told the club’s YouTube channel: “Absolutely buzzing. It feels so good, especially playing, obviously, Briton Ferry.

“They played well in the play-off final as well.

“So, it’s just great to just get that win against them again and really solidify our team going forward.”

In a repeat of last season’s Adran Leagues play-off, it remained goalless at the interval.

However, just a couple of minutes after the restart, Mari Gibbard supplied the assist and top markswoman Rosie Hughes (pictured) did the rest by firing into the bottom corner.

Mackenzie added the second goal with 20 minutes remaining to confirm Wrexham’s spot in the semi-finals, with the draw scheduled to take place on Wednesday evening.

Mackenzie, who said scoring a goal is “always going to be a great feeling”, added: “I felt like I really wanted to make an impression and really help the team out today and I feel like that goal really helped my confidence just as much as the team’s as well.

“It’s really important to make an impression, whatever minutes you get.

“So, coming off the bench, yeah, I was nervous at the beginning coming (on) in such an important match, but I think I did well enough to prove my place in the team now.”

Carra Jones, who set up Mackenzie for her goal, said: “It’s massive for us, like.

“We haven’t played for a couple of weeks, so it was good to get back on the pitch.

“But I obviously think getting the 2-0 win, we got a clean sheet and just proving that we deserve to be in this league as well after... the play-off final last season, so I’m happy with it all round.”

More than cup progress was at stake, with the Reds coming up against Briton Ferry Llansawel for the first time since they defeated the Adran South outfit 1-0 in their Newtown play-off last spring.

A late goal from Rebecca Pritchard sealed the deal for Steve Dale’s side on that occasion, making sure of promotion to the top flight following a perfect Adran North campaign.

Wrexham have hit the ground running since gaining promotion and a fine start to the season sees them sitting in second spot in the Adran Premier rankings, behind unbeaten front-runners Cardiff City.

The Reds are also still in the Adran Trophy and they will come up against Briton Ferry Llansawel once more in the last-16.

Jones added: “It definitely got a bit feisty, didn’t it?

“I wasn’t there last season, but obviously I’ve heard about it from the girls.

“You see all the stuff about it, but it was really good to get the 2-0 win today.”
