WREXHAM swimmers have been producing fireworks in the pool, writes Sally Jones.

Topping the points table with a combined score of 535, Wrexham Swimming Club again showed their unrivalled local dominance at their home Bonfire meet, held at Wrexham Waterworld.

As this was a level-three licensed meet, with no qualification, upper limit or cut off times, many of the club’s new and less experienced swimmers were able to gain valuable competition experience - this in the familiar surroundings of their home pool and with their training friends cheering them on.

Wrexham’s more seasoned performance athletes also came out in force, and, with a massive 85-strong squad turnout across the club’s squad structure, there were too many stand out individual swims to number.

Spencer Jones, 11, 13-year-old Joanne Andrews, Erin Jones, 14 and 16-year-old Megan Roberts all achieved the maximum 24 points across their four races, finishing with a full house of golds. Winning three races each were 10-year-old Noelle O’Hara and Dylan Williams, 12, while Molly Bates, 12, and Zac Campbell, 13, both achieved 23 points across four races.

Nine-year-old Carolina Morgado had an impressive day, taking 22 individual points and winning three golds, while Henry El-Taha, 11, and his little brother Myles, nine, also put in strong performances to finish with 20 points. Henry won four silver medals and Myles took two golds.

The following weekend, Wrexham Swimming Club were stoic in a hard-fought Arena League second round meet, where several opposing clubs had called on an alumnus of senior British swimmers to shore up their ranks.

Conversely, Wrexham were thin on numbers, particularly in the upper age groups, with several of their performance squad out with illness or injury.

Nevertheless, all of the swimmers in attendance stepped up and gave their best on the night, finishing just one point behind Altrincham in sixth but now with a B final relegation battle to consider on December 9.
