RUABON ROVERS can put their poor league form to one side and make a bold bid to reach round four.

Rovers are bottom of the North East Wales League’s Premier Division after storming to the Championship title last season. But they’ve enjoyed a terrific Trophy run, beating Penyffordd Lions, Aston Park Rangers and Coedpoeth United ahead of tomorrow’s home tie with Llanfairpwll.

“We really wanted an away trip but when you get a home draw against someone we don’t know much about, you always fancy your chances,” said Rovers’ captain Andrew Swarbrick, who hopes to shake off an ankle injury.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries and not much luck this season. It’s been fine margins really. We lost 4-1 at leaders Rhostyllen but it was never a 4-1.

“We just need that bit of luck to go our way and I’m sure our season will take off.”

Ruabon have Jimmy Jones and Conner Kendrick in the ranks - players who lifted the Welsh Trophy with Cefn Albion four years ago.

“Our manager, Gareth Edwards, always keeps going on about when he won it as a player, so it would be good to keep going as far as we can in the competition,” added Swarbrick.

Cefn Albion’s success in the cup has affected their position in the league but having won the competition four years ago, there’s no reason why they can’t go the full distance again.

“With having success in the Welsh Trophy and the league cup, it has meant we are falling behind on league games,” said first team coach Ian Andrews, who was back in temporary charge along with Sean Jones after Neil Ashton was axed two weeks ago.

“It’s been stop start and it’s quite frustrating at times so we need to build some momentum.”

Albion, who knocked out Anglesey opponents in Trearddur Bay away in the last round, take on another team from the island with Holyhead Hotspur their visitors tomorrow.

Brickfield’s Clywedog Park has been home for Cefn this season but Rangers have a home tie against St Asaph, giving Albion the chance to play on familiar ground at The Rock.

Gavin Parry always wanted an away tie and his wish was granted as Connah’s Quay Town - one of only two North East Wales League teams left in the competition - were drawn at Penrhyncoch.

“We got the bus trip we wanted but they are doing well in their respective league so it’s going to be tough,” said Parry, for whom Pascal Gomez will be looking to add to his season’s tally.

“If we can take a strong squad and set up right, then we’ll give them a good game, I’m sure of that.”

Flint Mountain go to Pwllheli and manager Aden Shannon said: “We have done our homework on them and we have had some good reports on them... again we will have to be at our best. As long as we go there and do the basics better than them, then I will be confident of going through.”

There’s an all-Ardal North West League affair at Llay Welfare where Saltney Town are the visitors while Rhos Aelwyd go to Llanrhaeadr.

Llay boss Mike Gadie said: “We are looking for an immediate reaction to Saturday’s shock loss to Bethesda at home and the players know that we will not accept that kind of performance again. That being said, I’m confident that if we turn up with our attitudes right we will have enough to hopefully make the next round.”

Rhos boss Gareth Jones said: “I want us to go as far as we can and there’s no reason why we can’t go and win there.”
